Jezebel’s infamous story is introduced and documented in the Bible in both 1 and 2 Kings. She was married to Ahab, King of Israel and through a series of events, became to be considered an evil and seductive queen. At first, the true Jezebel and her schemes were hidden, but after becoming Ahab’s wife, she began to introduce the level her evil influence upon her husband and ultimately Samaria. This is when Jezebel began to usurp her husband’s authority as Israel’s King.
When Ahab became King of Israel, he was considered to be more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any other king before him. Jezebel, Ahab’s wife, was probably even eviler than him. After taking over the leadership of Samaria, Jezebel introduced her god, Baal, to Ahab. They set up an altar for Baal there in Samaria then set out to kill everyone who was considered to be a true prophet of God. A prophet was only able to save his life if he agreed to become a “yes-man” for Ahab or secretly flee and escape.
King Ahab was a whiney king and was not known for having much of a spine, so to speak. His inherent weakness allowed the evil queen to lead and run the household as she wished. Jezebel never agreed to compromise her needs or wants. She loved and demanded to have everything her way – everything she wanted when she wanted it. They both felt as though they deserved to have everything at any cost. We begin to see this in 1 Kings 21 when Jezebel has Naboth murdered because he denies selling his garden to Ahab.
After Naboth said no to the king, King Ahab came sulking back to his house in a personal pity party. He threw himself down on his bed and refused to eat. When Jezebel asked him what was wrong, he said it was “because of the word which Naboth the Jezereelite had spoken to him…” That word was no, and Ahab and Jezebel were not used to anyone telling them no. They did not take it well when Naboth was confident enough in the Lord to say no to the king.
Because Jezebel, like Ahab, did not like hearing the word no, she became vengeful against Naboth. She began setting him up for destruction by making up stories and spreading lies about him. Through a series of events and because of the lies that were told about him, Naboth was soon stoned to death. After Jezebel heard that Naboth was now out of the way, her husband was finally granted his desire, Naboth’s property.
Jezebel is known as the first documented person in history to harbor the destructing spirit that, through a series of specific behaviors, ultimately leads to her death. This is why we call this spirit the Jezebel Spirit. We are sure to know that this spirit did not die when Jezebel died. It continues to live today; harboring itself in many unsuspecting (or not so unsuspecting) people around us. Most psychiatrists have labeled this spirit as Narcissism, which I first introduced here. In many posts to come, we will reveal how Jezebel’s spirit and Narcissism run parallel and how it continues to harbor itself in many men and women today. It is not just limited to women only. The Jezebel Spirit is not gender-specific as many believe, and it will live in and feed on anyone who will allow it.
2 Kings 9:22 reveals Joram asking Jehu if he had come in peace; to which Jehu replied that there could be no peace as long as Jezebel was around, and Revelation 2 indicates that we can no longer tolerate Jezebel. We can no longer tolerate the Jezebel Spirit that is still alive today. In future posts to come, I plan to continue writing about Jezebel and Narcissism and will reveal how Jezebel continues to live, work, and always lead to destruction. I will also discuss how to ultimately conquer the Jezebels in our own life.
