Baking Steaks in the Kitchen

For dinner, my plan was to grill steaks and market-fresh corn on the cob on the grill. After marinating the steaks for a few hours and covering the corn cob with a slab of butter and a pinch of salt, it suddenly and violently started to rain. Considering our grill isn’t under the covered portion of our back deck, this puts a damper on my grilling plans, and I had to suddenly change my direction. After a few minutes on Google, I learned about baking steaks.

Needless to say, I was very intrigued and excited! With just a little more marinade, I was quickly on my way. First, I seared the steak in a pan on the stove to help hold in moisture. Then I placed the marinated and seared steak in an oven-safe container, threw fresh cut onion on top, and covered it with a lid. I began to bake the steak in the oven for about 30 minutes at 375 degrees. I removed the lid for the last 10 minutes of cooking to allow the onions to become a little caramelized. Along with the steaks, I also baked corn on the cob that I had also prepared in aluminum foil with a little moisture, butter, and salt.

This meal was very easy… much easier than the original idea of grilling, and because the steaks cooked slowly in their own juices, it left them very tender and juicy, not overcooked. My husband said that I could bake steaks in the oven anytime I wanted, so it seems that he was happy with the outcome too. Along with the steaks and corn, I served fresh green beans from the farmer’s market. Yes, I did cook them on the stove for about an hour but had I known beforehand, I would have probably baked them in the oven too.

Even though our dinner was over, apparently my baking wasn’t. At the request of my family and my stomach, I decided to bake cookies. For me, baking cookies calls for more than just pulling cookie dough out of the fridge. I have to make them from scratch, even down to milling my own flour. After pulling together my potential ingredients, we decided on Cherry Vanilla Butterscotch. This may seem like an odd combination, but they were the best cookies ever… both organic AND delicious!

This morning began with made-from-scratch waffles with fresh blueberries and strawberries. For lunch, we had sandwiches made from my special homemade bread with homemade peanut butter. I found myself starting my day baking in the kitchen, and now I am getting ready to end my day… baking in the kitchen, but I love it!
